Chainmail / Chain Mail / Chainmaille / Chain Maille? - This popular technique has so many spellings it will make you dizzy. As far as I'm aware there is no official spelling. Many designers opt for "chain mail" because it's easy to remember and easy to search for online. Others, like me, think that "chain maille" delineates it from "chain letters". Sheets of chain are referred to as "maille", and so chain maille seems more consistent. So, why two words instead of one? Purely habit. I started spelling it as "chain maille" one day and never thought to switch. Read more about the history of chain maille here.

2010 Trends

The 2009 economy has had a major impact on the way people shop. Fashion lovers are feeling frugal, but are choosing to splash out on statement pieces that work with everything, limiting their trend consumption. The key for 2010 fashion is to add “colorful optimism” in dour times. Texture, volume and color are key to getting the right look; pair with bold, unique necklace designs and large chandelier earrings for a perfect mix.

Add pops of color with large gemstones, and add neutrals like gray and pink champagne to ground your outfit. Garnet, turquoise and tourmaline are particularly good for your jewelry selection this year, or add some shimmer with moonstone and labradorite. Layer everything for fashion-forward ensembles and disregard outdated notions of matching – if you love it, wear it.

The runway this year saw eclectic necklaces in large design, along with stacked bracelets and cuffs. Pair a new, hot bracelet with old favorites to achieve the more-is-more look. Pantone named it's color of 2010 as turquoise, so add this water-loving stone to your outfits.

Choosing jewelry companies that are easy on the earth, and looking for nature-inspired designs is more important than ever. Learn your favorites company’s environmental impact statement and feel even better about your shopping.

Mixing Metals and Styles

Remember when your handbag had to match your belt and shoes? Sticking to just silver or gold has gone the same way, with more designers than ever choosing to mix metals and tones for looks that are totally fresh.

This is great news for brides. In the past if your wedding ring set was in gold, there was great pressure to wear a gold jewelry set. Now they have the option of switching metals, combining warm stone colors to complement their rings. Stones that were traditionally paired with gold, like citrine, are now getting new life with crisp silver.

The very notion of the jewelry set is fast dying out too. Fewer shoppers are interested in buying matching necklaces and earrings, and have much more freedom in creating their own styles by mixing their own jewelry palettes. Pair a garnet necklace with smokey quartz earrings one day, then switch out the earrings with amethyst the next for a whole new look.
