Onyx is yet another variety of quartz, with banded colors ranging from white through black. It was traditionally used for carving cabochons, which can display the layered bands beautifully. The majority of onyx sold today is dyed agate, and real onyx has become quite rare. Agate is significantly softer than true onyx, making it much easier to carve into beads and ornaments. It can be brought to a high polish, and is abundant. It should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning system, or with abrasive or ammonia-based chemicals. Discoloration can occur.

Onyx is a strength-giving stone, providing support in times of difficulty or confusion. It promotes vigor and stamina, and is said to hold the memories of all that happens to the wearer. As such it can be used as a very therapeutic stone.
